5.0 out of 5 stars This gate exceeded my expectations, March 8, 2002

This review is from: Kidco G15 Gateway Pressure Mount Child Safety Gate, White (Baby Product)
I purchased this gate just recently because I have a eleven month old son who is always trying to climb up the stairs. I purchased an inexpensive gate several months ago and it wouldn't even mount properly. There are several reasons why I am so pleased with this gate:

1). It's pressure mounted so there are no holes in my walls.
2). Each of the pressure mounts can be adjusted individually. What I mean by that is each pressure mount twists forward until it reaches the wall. The reason this was so important for me was because my home has old wood work and the baseboards are almost seven inches high and about an inch thick. If each of the pressure mounts were not separately adjustable, then the gate would meet at the baseboard, but would not be able to touch the wall. This gate handles that dilemma beautifully.
3). It's extremely durable and sturdy. My son grasps onto it and shakes it violently and it doesn't budge. And because it's made of metal, there are no worries about... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Looking Gate, June 15, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Kidco G15 Gateway Pressure Mount Child Safety Gate, White (Baby Product)
This gate looks so much better than those white plastic ones. It looks great with the stainless steel appliances in the kitchen. As it stands it looks like it is part of the house. And we didn't even have to drill any holes so it can be removed at any time. It seems to be withstanding the pressures of a 1 year old and a 3 year old.

4.0 out of 5 stars center gateway in platinum, January 17, 2006
This review is from: Kidco G15 Gateway Pressure Mount Child Safety Gate, White (Baby Product)
the gate was easy to install. took a few mins to adjust the gate. but once it's in the door way it works ok. the only to things i do not like are the latch to open and close can be difficult. also there is a metal threshhold across the floor. thats the support so you have to remember to make a step over.which took my son some time to get used to. also in the late night i've stubbed a few toes. but over all it a good swing gate.

Product Description

White, U-Frame Child Safety Gate, Walk Through Pressure Gate For Doorways 29-1/4" Up To 37-1/2", Installs Without Tools Or Hardware, U Shaped Frame Remains Firmly Installed While The Center Walk Through Door Opens In Either Direction, Optional Model G 5.5 Extension Kits For Openings Up To 48-1/8" Wide.

Editorial Review

Unlike most of the metal safety gates on the market, the Center Gateway does not permanently attach to walls or banisters with hinges and screws. Instead, this 29.5-inch-high steel barrier uses a pressure-mounted system to hold it in place across doorways and halls in your house. Although it may lack the complete strength of a permanently mounted gate and probably shouldn't be used in front of stairways, the Center Gateway is far more versatile: after installation you can easily detach and move it throughout your home to block off-limit rooms and spaces as needed. The Center Gateway also eliminates the need for drilling holes into the wood and metalwork around your home. The gateway is designed to block spaces from 29.25 to 37.5 inches wide, and you can purchase optional extension kits (sold separately) to extend the gate's length to almost 49 inches. Adult assembly is required. --Chris Burns

2.0 out of 5 stars Decent gate with one MAJOR flaw and a few small ones, January 13, 2010
By
This review is from: Evenflo Secure Step Top of Stair Gate - Taupe (Baby Product)
The EvenFlo Secure Step is a sturdily built, heavy gate specifically designed for stairs, though it can be mounted other areas. I was able to mount it easily into studs at the staircase top. Even after moving, it mounted again quickly and easily in the new house. It is a little difficult to adjust width, and sometimes wiggles a bit, requiring retightening. The MAJOR design flaw is the plastic tab that hooks into the bottom of the gate to stop the gate from swinging both ways. It relies on a plastic bump to sit in a hole to be "secure". My 2 year old ran into the gate full speed and went right through it and down the stairs; the plastic tab takes very little pressure to move out of its setting. Luckily he was only bruised. I immediately went out and bought a 2" #6 screw and nut, drilled a hole through the plastic piece and threaded the screw through the tab and hole in the gate to properly secure it to the gate. Another issue: the gate doesn't have built-in way to latch out of the way... Read more

1.0 out of 5 stars Questionable Design... I returned it., March 4, 2007
By
M. Bechtel (Plainfield, IL USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I bought this gate today, installed it, and ended up returning it after I realized that I was personally uncomfortable with the gate's design from a safety standpoint. Unlike Evenflo's excellent standard stair-top gate, this unit has a new plastic latch mechanism which appeared nifty at first, but seemed insecure when I set it up as per the instructions. The root of the problem in my case appears to be the "childproof knobs" that loosen to allow you to extend and contract the width of the gate. When fully tightened, the gate is supposed to maintain it's width, which is necessary for the new latch system to function. In my case, the fully tightened knobs didn't prevent the gate from accidentally contracting, and after a few open/close swings, the latch started to slip... In short, the gate had become too narrow to "catch" the latch. Considering this is marketed as a "stair top" model, I find this really concerning. I'm not one to call things "junk" or rant and rave, but I do feel... Read more

1.0 out of 5 stars Plastic latch is junk, November 26, 2007
By
B. Smouse (Lenexa, KS USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I bought this product 6 months ago and installed two gates in our house. I had the same problem as previous reviewers, when pulling up on the latch to open the gate, the gate frequently slide along its rails and became smaller so when you go to close it, it no longer latches. You can snug down the knobs but they don't hold long. I could deal with this problem by making sure that when you close the gate everything still lines up. However just recently the latch system failed to open anymore. I took it apart and a small plastic knob broke on the inside and the latch will not open anymore. I'm sure they saved alot of money making the latch out of cheap plastic and the rest of the gate out of metal. It is you the consumer that get screwed when the shortcut catches up to you.

Product Description

Evenflo Secure Step Top of Stair Metal Gate The Evenflo Top of Stair Gate features neutral styling and color enabling it to blend in with most home decors. The Evenflo Secure Step Top of Stair Metal Gate safety is great because of its ease-of-use. It features one-hand operation so parents carrying a child can easily operate the gate. That's a feature often lacking on other Evenflo baby gates. This safety gate is great for high-traffic areas because of the one-hand operation, and also because of its slam-latch close swing door. The baby gate will swing in either direction parents prefer, left or right. It features an infinite width adjustment with the push of a button and requires zero tools. The Evenflo metal gate is mounted with a four-point hardware set which combines with the swing control to provide one of the most secure top of stair gate mountings around.

3.0 out of 5 stars Product is okay, installation is a major chore, April 25, 2010
By
NY Guy (Monsey, NY United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Kidco Wood Safeway (Baby Product)
As for so many others who purchase this gate, the arrangement at the top of our stairs does not allow for a gate to be stalled perpendicular to the walls. We needed one that could be angled. There are not too many gates that make this claim, and this one seemed to be the best of the bunch.

After spending a solid five hours installing this product (including some time paring down the newel post in order to prevent the gate from hitting it), here is what I think:

1) The gate and hardware are of good quality. I think they should include additional screws and anchors (not everyone will be mounting on wood exclusively), but that is a minor gripe.

2) Despite what other say, I think that the instructions are sufficient. You must examine the illustrations and read the directions carefully, but they are not particularly difficult to understand, and seem accurate to me.

3) The installation is clearly intended for one who is handy, good with details,... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Great gate, January 5, 2008
Yes, this gate takes an hour or so to assemble. It's not that confusing if, as the other reviewer said, you lay everything out beforehand. Everything needs to be aligned carefully for the gate to work properly. But if your brackets are aligned, the gate itself can be adjusted so that it seats properly.

I bought this gate because I didn't have a stud right at the top of the stairs. I was able to angle the gate from the nearest stud over to the newel post. The gate opens and shuts easily with one hand, once you get used to the feel of it. You need to raise the whole gate slightly, then let it drop into place. (This is not clearly explained in the directions, either.) Since the latch is on one end of the gate (rather than in the middle, as with some of the plastic gates), you might have to switch your baby to the other hand to close it behind you.

It's an attractive, natural wood color.

5.0 out of 5 stars Handsome gate that works great, April 15, 2008
By
K. Dyer (Santa Cruz, CA USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I have two of these Angle Mount gates now as well as an older version of the wooden Safeway gate and I love them. They look nice, they swing nicely, and they latch firmly. The older version of the gate is simpler to latch, but I find it requires constant adjustment of the bolts since they are always coming loose. This new version of the hardware is slightly more finicky to set up and align, but then stays that way for all time, latching and unlatching smoothly through repeated use.
As for the difficulty of assembly, I didn't find it as confusing as some here claim. My four year old son helped lay out the parts and figure out how they went together. The long lasting quality and convenient use of this gate compared to cheaper gates (which I have owned and used) is worth the extra work to put it together.
